We are so very fortunate to live in an area where: 1. The walk to school is on quiet roads. 2. School is well within walking distance. 3. I work from home which allows me the time to walk to school with the kids. Would we be able to walk if these three things were not a fact of our life? My honest answer would be no.
Walking to school is part of our life. There are many families that live in the area that also walk to school so I never organized a “walking school bus” because it was already happening. Sometimes we walk with them, other times we are just ahead or behind them. This week I paid a bit more attention to who was walking and realized that many families were. That was comforting to know. Maybe the stats will reverse when our kids have kids! This year’s Fall Family Challenge saw over 4,000 families across the country making time for nature during the busy back-to-school season. If you were one, I do hope you were able to take something away from the challenge. And if you had fun with this challenge be sure to mark May 2014 in your calendars—that’s when the David Suzuki 30 x 30 Nature Challenge kicks off!
At the beginning of the school year, we made a commitment to
walk to school twice a week. After this
week I decided to add more car free trips to our schedule. I am going to make an effort to try shopping
without a car or visit friends without driving.
It will be a challenge but I know it can be done!
|If the walk to school was like this for everyone perhaps there would be more walking.|
